MOCCA Workshop on Law, Society, and Corruption in Central Asia

MOCCA Workshop on Law, Society and Corruption in Central Asia

The "Multilevel Orders of Corruption in Central Asia" (MOCCA) project, funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program, held a two-day online workshop on October 21-22, 2024. The event focused on advancing research on law, society, and corruption in Central Asia.

During the workshop, project members talked about the possibilities of doing an edited volume as part of the MOCCA project. Editors Rustamjon Urinboyev and Kobil Ruziev led the workshop, which brought together all MOCCA researchers from various disciplines to present their current progress of their research within the project and receive feedback on their ongoing studies. The workshop was structured around eight panels, each panel with 4 presentations, covering crucial topics such as:

  • Corruption and informality in higher education
  • Corruption, informality, and social norms
  • Interface between international norms and domestic legal systems
  • Corruption and business environment
  • Anticorruption legislation and policy strategies
  • Corruption and digital technologies
  • Corruption, inequality, and social change

Participants engaged in productive discussions, sharing insights and methodologies to enhance their research. The editors provided valuable guidance to help researchers refine their work for future publication.

Key outcomes of the workshop include:

  • Researchers are expected to submit their first draft manuscripts to the editors by the end of March 2025.
  • A tentative MOCCA annual meeting has been scheduled for early March 2025 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to further develop research projects.

The MOCCA project continues to make significant strides in understanding and addressing corruption in Central Asia, contributing to the global effort to combat this complex issue.
